What I Did With My Summer Vacation!

Although it’s not yet summer. And I’m not on vacation.

Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook is out there. I’m kinda addicted myself. Anyway, I saw this photo

Rescue JRTx Belly 5-13-13

of a very pregnant chihuahua/jack russell kinda girl posted by the Friends of Scottsboro Animal Shelter. And I couldn’t unsee it. What I could see in my mind was that poor, 10 pound peanut in a cement run all by herself, in the middle of the night, struggling to give birth and care for her puppies with no loving hands to help. And that couldn’t be.

So – with Bob’s blessing, she came home with me, after a quick stop at my fabulous Doc’s office, who confirmed 6 puppies, as well as heartworms, hookworms, and anemia. Oy! Although the heartworms will have to be dealt with after the puppies are weaned, we now have meds to get rid of the hookworms and supplements to help with the anemia, and our job is to get as much good nutrition into this emaciated, parasite infested, little bit as we can before the puppies make their arrival.

A week and a half later, in the early hours of Memorial Day, ”Honey” easily, and in under 2 and a 1/2 hours, whelps her fat, perfect puppies, 3 girls and 3 boys, in a rainbow of colors and markings.

They are growing fast and Honey is a wonderful, attentive, protective mother. At two+ weeks, their eyes have opened, they’re trying to get up on their feet, and the beginning stages of the ”bitey face” game have started.

Honey and her puppies have had a rough start, and we don’t know what the future holds for them yet, but for next couple of months we’re just going to wallow in “puppy breath” and soak up the love.

“Focus” on Westminster!

Hope you can see the details in this photo. It’s an effect called “focus” from a friend’s iPad. Junie B and me on the green carpet. I love how we’re in focus while the judge and crowd are blurred, which is pretty much how I feel when we show – all that matters is us working together as a team – the rest is a blur. What a wonderful photo of a wonderful memory!

Want a little Cheery-ness?

Cheery-O is home again. After giving us two beautiful and healthy litters, Cheery had been as enjoying retired life as a companion to an older couple not far away from us. Health reasons (the wife has MS) are precipitating a move; they tearfully decided it would be best to return Cheery. Of course, Cheery is welcome here for as long as she needs to be, but I would like to find her a new perfect forever home. Cheery-O is a healthy, happy, just turned 6-year-old sable Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She is spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations, and house-broken. She can perform some tricks, is leash and crate trained, and knows basic obedience commands. Cheery gets along with other dogs one-on-one (had shared her home and people with a bull mastiff girl), but can be bossy in a pack situation, so a home with no more than one other even-tempered dog is best. Cheery is AKC and UKC registered and has a Canine Good Citizen title.

If you’re interested in learning more about Cheery, please contact me.

Start spreading the news! We’re leaving . . . well, not today, but . . .

June and I will soon be headed to the Big Apple for the Super Bowl of dog shows, the Greatest (to us) Show on Earth – June and I are going to WESTMINSTER!

Although I’m a New Yorker by birth and lived there until Bob and I were married, I have never been to Westminster. I saw my first corgi when watching the Westminster Kennel Club shows on TV (the year Bill Shelton’s beautiful Ch Coventry Queue won the Herding Group, if I remember correctly) and the rest is history. I hadn’t really planned to go to Westminster this year, but the timing just worked out, so why not? Junie’s daddy Pilot won the breed last year, and while I have no expectations for us to start a family tradition, it’ll be fun to strut our stuff on the famous green carpet!

Merry Christmas!

Invitations!

Because Junie finished her AKC Grand Championship this year, she qualified for the prestigeous AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show. (I’ve been excited to get invitations to associated human parties as well.) Though we won’t be there in person (for reasons I hope will make themselves known by showtime) we’ll be excitedly watching through cyber-space and on television, rooting for the friends that are there!
